Three robbers escaped from police lockup in Sangli district of western Maharashtra today, following which two police constables have been suspended.
The incident happened shortly after policemen attended a farewell party for their colleague.
The farewell event concluded at 10 PM last night and policemen had returned to their duties. The robbers fled between 0020 hrs to 0115 hrs, PSI Bajirao Mohite told PTI over phone from Tasgoan.
They fled by breaking the roof tiles and under cover of darkness as power supply was off at around 11 PM, the police official said.
The farewell event was at Koyna Mangal Karyalay, about two km from the police station.
The trio, Kumar Pawar, Rajendra Chavan and Rahul Mane were arrested from Atpadi in Sangli district while they were attempting a robbery.
Last night, most policemen on duty were busy in the farewell function for a police inspector at Tasgaon police station.
Three teams have been set up to nab the robbers, police said.
Incidentally, former Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil hailed from Tasgaon.
