The incident occurred in wee hours when the deceased, later identified as Suresh Purohit, was sitting on the roof of an engine of a Mumbai-bound Mahalaxmi Express.
"As soon as the driver of the train realised that someone was sitting on the roof, he immediately halted the train at Saswad Road railway station and ordered the man to come down," said a station duty officer, Government Railway Police, Pune.
"The four RPF men came and tried to bring the man down. However, after alighting, Purohit started hitting them with stones in which two constables got injured seriously.
"The man then snatched a rifle from an injured constable and pointed it at them while threatening to kill them and other passengers in the train, which prompted one of the constables, Tanaji Hanawate to open fire in self defense," the officer said.
Purohit was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
