A consumer forum here today awarded a compensation of over Rs 14 lakh to families of two sisters, one of them married, who had died of burn injuries in LPG cylinder blast.
The directions for giving compensation were issued to Bharat Petroleum Corporation, local LPG dealer and National Insurance Company by the President of Ambala Consumer Forum A K Sardana.
The two sisters - Ranjit Kaur (married, 24) and Manjit Kaur (22) - had succumbed to their burn injuries in 2011.
Ranjit Kaur's husband Gudev Singh and Manjit Kaur's mother Surender Kaur had filed a petition in the Consumer Forum on November 3, 2011 seeking compensation.
The complainants said that on June 8, 2011 they brought a cylinder from a local LPG dealer.
Two sisters while trying to fix the regulator on the cylinder found it was leaking and suddenly it caught fire, the complainants said adding both sisters sustained serious burn injuries.
They were rushed to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh where they succumbed to their injuries, family said.
They also said the dealer supplied the cylinder without carrying out necessary checks.
However, the LPG dealer maintained there was no defect.
After hearing both sides, the forum ordered the parties concerned to pay a sum of Rs 7,20,000 each to Manjit's parents and Ranjit's husband with simple interest at the rate of 10 per cent per annum.
