Akali leader Navdeep Singh Goldy first tossed off the turban of deputy mayor Avtar Singh during an argument and fled from the spot after snatching the AK-47 assault rifle of his gunman.
The incident took place when the leaders attended the district level meeting with regard to the development of certain areas of the city.
The incident happened in the presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner Tajinderpal Singh Sandhu.
Later, Goldy was suspended from the party for anti-party activities, Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Coordinator, Youth Akali Dal said.
