Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal today demanded that a judicial probe be conducted into the death of a woman Kabaddi player during a clash between two groups over a property dispute in Ferozepur.

Lachhmi, 24, died on May 8 after being hit by a bullet fired during the clash over the possession of a two-acre plot in Fatehgarh Gehri village. Her family has refused to cremate the body and has been protesting near Ferozepur police station for the past four days.

Police arrested three persons, including the main accused Harpreet Singh, in connection with the case. But the family says it won't cremate the body until all the accused are arrested.

Badal alleged that the police was "acting like stooges of local MLA and had refused to arrest all the accused", despite the family and residents protesting with the body near the police station.

In a statement, he alleged that the police had refused to arrest eight of the 11 people named in the FIR.

In this situation, it is impossible to get a "free and fair inquiry" into the case and only a judicial inquiry can ensure justice to the young girl and her family, Badal said.
