On a fast in protest against quarrying in ecologically sensitive areas along the Ganga, Sanand, associated with the Matri Sadan Ashram of Haridwar, was under police custody since August 1.
Ashram chief Swami Shivanand said the apex court had issued orders for Sanand's release on August 19.
After being kept at a hospital till August 8, the Swami had been lodged at Haridwar disrict jail.
Addressing a press conference after Sanand's release, Matri Sadan chief Swami Shivanand accused the district administration of sleeping over the apex court order for two days.
