The 58-year-old actor said he was "hooked" on to his character, Father Micheal, when McGovern told him about the "radical" storyline, reported DigitalSpy.
"I love Jimmy's work. A couple of years ago, he and I met up, and he gave me an idea of what he wanted from this character. That immediately got me hooked. What he was proposing was radical and courageous storytelling," Bean said.
Talking about his role of a pastor, the former "Game of Thrones" actor said, unlike other films, he is neither playing the villain nor getting killed in the BBC One show.
