He was 58 and is survived by his wife and two sons, family members said.
Mahanta had suffered multiple head injuries as he fell on the road on August five last and was undergoing treatment at the hospital where he died following a cardiac arrest.
He was associated with several publications like 'Janakranti', 'Ajir Asom' and 'Natun Dainik'.
He was also associated with the Natun Dainik Employess Union, Journalist Union of Assam, Journalist Action Committee, Journalists' Forum Assam and Guwahati Press Club.
Mahanta was also the founder President of the All Assam Media Employees Federation.
