Sembcorp Gayatri Power Ltd (SGPL) today said it has synchronised the first 660 Megawatt unit of its 1,320 MW plant with the grid.
The company, formerly NCC Power Projects Ltd, owns and operates one of the two supercritical coal-fired power plants in the 2640-MW Sembcorp Gayatri Power Complex at Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh's SPSR Nellore district, an official statement said.
The first power plant - Thermal Powertech Corporation India - commenced commercial operation in September 2015, and is already supplying power to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The second power plant is expected to be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2016.
Atul Nargund, Managing Director SGPL said, the synchronisation of the first unit with the grid is a significant milestone towards the completion of Sembcorp's second power plant in Andhra Pradesh.
"We look forward to commencing commercial operations of this first unit in the third quarter 2016, and the full completion of the plant in the fourth quarter 2016," he said.
At USD 1.5 billion investment, the power plant utilises supercritical technology which allows for enhanced efficiency and reduced emissions compared to other conventional coal-fired power plants, the statement said.
