The 28 cases, which were taken up for inquiry before K Baskaran, Member of SHRC, include the alleged custodial death of a trader in Tirupur in 2012 and another death due to electrocution in prison here in 2010, police said.
One Mohanraj, arrested for allegedly murdering his landlord, died during the course of interrogation in 2012.
But police had claimed that he sustained injuries after a fall from a wall while attempting to escape from the police station and died in the Government Hospital in Tirupur.
Another case related to the death of C Kumar of Salem, convicted for the murder of his father in 2006, due to electrocution inside the Central Jail here on in August 2010.
Taking suo motu cognizance, SHRC began an inquiry and the member is expected to visit the prison to inquire with the inmates and officials, they said.
