The much awaited 'Solid Waste Management Project' will be operational from next year as State Government has assured this to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests headed by Ashwani Kumar.
Kumar, the Rajya Sabha MP, said that the State Government has assured to the committee that it is determined to have the project operational by 2016.
Kumar, who along with ten other members of the Committee were on a visit here, said that the Committee has pulled up the district Administration about the heaps of plastic waste seen in the every nook and corner of Amritsar.
The Committee held deliberations with officers of the Punjab Government including Sewerage Board, Municipal Corporation, Traffic Department and Punjab Pollution Control Board to have an overview of the environment, Kumar said.
It also expressed concern over the uranium contamination observed in the ground water samples by BARC, he added.
He informed that officers of Punjab Government acknowledged the need of the establishing the sewage treatment and collection capacity. They however, desired to have financial support from the Central Government to develop the treatment capacity.
Touching on another issue, he said the need for establishing real time ambient air quality monitoring here is urgently needed to keep a track of the city's air quality and its likely impact on the Golden Temple, he said.
