South Delhi Mayor Khushiram Chunar garlanded the statue of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar at Lajpat Nagar at a simple function and recalled the contributions of the leader.
"Savarkar was one of those freedom fighters who had many firsts to his credit. He was the first Indian student who was rusticated from college owing to his patriotism. He was the first person who burnt foreign clothes and material," SDMC said in a statement.
Savarkar was born in 1883 in the family of Damodar and Radhabai Savarkar in the village of Bhagur, near the city of Nashik in Maharashtra. He was a freedom fighter, politician, poet, writer and a playwright.
