Four speed interceptor vehicles in Guwahati and one in Nagaon town would check erratic driving leading to fatal accidents, speeding, lane jumping, red light violations and reckless road behavior, IGP (Central Western Range) L R Bishnoi said today.
The vehicles inducted under the aegis of the World Bank at a cost of nearly Rs 30 lakh each were equipped with speed laser camera, breath alcohol analyser, top bar light-cum-siren, roof mounted flip down monitor, UPS and additional batteries, he said.
Spot fines would be imposed and a data bank of offenders would be stored and third time offenders would have their driving licence cancelled.
Stating that 4.4 lakh of the 15 lakh cars in the state were in Guwahati, Bishnoi said last year saw 1078 accidents in the capital city with 246 casualties.
Installation of CCTVs in Guwahati has been completed in 90 of the 91 proposed locations, he added.
