An adult male elephant was killed today when a speeding passenger train hit the animal while it was crossing tracks in between Madarihat and Hasimara stations, forest department officers said.
"The incident happened late in the evening when the Alipurduar bound New Jalpaiguri-Alipurduar Intercity Express was passing through the forest area. The elephant was hit by the train and it fell in a ditch by the tracks," said DFO, Jaldapara Division, Bhaskar J V.
Conservator of Forests B K Sood said the incident happened amid heavy rains in the area and senior forest department officers have rushed to the spot.
