The state higher education department had recently issued an advisory to the state-run varsity, saying that to avoid any disturbance during exams of different boards, students' elections should not be held in February.
Protesting against this, a small group of students from the university gheraoed vice-chancellor Suranjan Das. Till late in the night, he was under gherao, along with other officials in his office.
"I believe that things can be sorted out by negotiations and discussions. I am hoping to sort out the matter with the students," Das told PTI.
On several earlier occasions, groups of students have gheraoed the VC over various campus issues. In 2014, Das' predecessor Abhijit Chakrabarti was gheraoed demanding a fresh probe panel in the alleged sexual harassment of a girl student. After months of protest, Chakrabarti was forced to resign.
