A three-member committee headed by Shiromani Akali Dal general secretary and MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was constituted by the Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, for selecting the Mayor for Patiala Municipal Corporation.
In a statement released from the party head office here today, SAD secretary and spokesman Daljit Singh Cheema said besides Dhindsa, party general secretary and MP Balwinder Singh Bhunder and Education Minister Sikander Singh Malooka are the other members of the committee.
The first meeting of this committee will be held on March 28 in Patiala circuit house, he said adding that the committee will meet all municipal councillors and other SAD leaders and submit its final report to party president at the earliest.
The state government has fixed April 2 for electing the new Mayor for Patiala city.
The post for mayor had fallen vacant after Jaspal Singh Pardhan tendered his resignation following his alleged involvement in the murder of his daughter-in-law, Parampreet Kaur.
"We have dispatched letters to all councillors to attend the meeting in which the Mayor will be elected," divisional commissioner Gurlavleen Singh Sidhu confirmed.
Sources said, the SAD High Command is convinced that Pardhan has no role in Parampreet's murder, but the party does not want to court another controversy by re-appointing him, as the case is still pending in Punjab and Haryana High Court after the deceased's father filed a plea seeking CBI probe into the murder.
