The effigy of Myanmar's State Counsellor and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi was burnt here today by Muslim welfare organisations, who organised a rally demanding a stop to the atrocities against Rohingyas in Myanmar bringing the city to a halt for about four hours.
"We are extremely aggrieved about the ongoing heinous atrocities on Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. Thousands of Rohingya Muslims including children have been killed by the police and military in that country. The Myanmar goverment must take responsibility," Furfura Sharif Peerzada Toha Siddiqui said.
"We condemn the decision of the central government (to deport Rohingyas living in the country illegally) and demand immediate roll back of it," Mohammed Nuruddin of All Bengal Minority Students Federation said.
Later, a ten-member delegation from ten Muslim organisations who organised the protest went to the Myanmar Consulate and submitted a memorandum demanding that its government protect the Rohingya Muslims.
West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Adhir Chowdhury, CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty also participated in the rally.
