Telangana DGP Anurag Sharma today said his department has played a major role in the plantation drive under the 'Harithaharam' programme and also in the protection of plants.
The DGP, who inaugurated the third phase of the programme at the Manchal Police Station under the jurisdiction of Rachakonda Police Commissionerate here by planting a mango sapling, said his department was given a plantation target of one crore this year.
"Apart from planting the saplings, it's also important to protect the plants," he said while addressing a gathering.
The top cop said the flagship programme will increase the greenery in the state.
"Since the inception of the programme, the Police Department has played a major role in the plantation drive and protection of plants," Sharma said in an official release.
"The implementation of the scheme is monitored every day and the information regarding plantation from the district units is uploaded on the website," the DGP said.
Ibrahimpatnam MLA Manchi Reddy Kishan Reddy said the Police department should be appreciated for taking up the 'Harithaharam' programme on a large scale.
He said the state government's initiative to include school children to plant five saplings each will increase the responsibility about the protection of environment.
Additional Director General of Police (Railways and Road Safety), T Krishna Prasad said the government was on a mission mode to increase the forest area from the current 24 per cent to 33 per cent in the state.
"Last year, the police department's target was planting 20 lakh saplings, but the department has planted 95 lakhs saplings," Prasad said.
