Three persons drowned in the Cauvery river near Molasi here while trying to save a family member, police said.
The tragedy occurred when the family decided to take a dip in the river yesterday, DSP Gajendran said.
As 17-year-old Mohammed Yasiff, who had gone to a private college at Trichengode to write an entrance exam for admission at JIPMER, was seen struggling in the water, his father and two others rushed to rescue him.
Some locals jumped into the river and managed to rescue the boy, but his father and the two others drowned, police said, adding, the bodies have been recovered.
