Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) Chairman M Kodandaram and his supporters were today taken into custody as they tried to hold a meeting here, for which permision was denied by police.
The TJAC proposed to organise the meeting at Tank Bund on the banks of Hussain Sagar lake to commemorate 'million march', a protest programme organised in 2011 as part of separate Telangana agitation.
The TJAC comprises different people's organisations.
Police denied permission for the meeting and made tight security arrangements at the Tank Bund and other places in the city to ensure law and order.
Traffic was closed on the upper Tank Bund road from 11 AM and 5PM and it was diverted through other routes.
Kodandaram was taken into custody as he tried to attend the meeting which does not have permission, a police official told reporters.
Speaking to reporters, Kodandaram criticised the state government for not allowing the meeting to be conducted peacefully.
Scores of TJAC activists were taken into preventive custody, he claimed.
The 'million march' held on March 10 in 2011 had turned violent with several statues on the Tank Bund being vandalised and some political leaders and others coming under attack.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V V Srinivasa Rao told reporters that police acted as per law and that those who attempted to attend the meeting were taken into custody.
