TN police to get Rs 100 cr worth hi-tech gadgets

Giving a major thrust to police modernisation, Tamil Nadu government today announced a series of measures, including procuring state-of-the-art equipment such as bomb detectors and communication gadgets for the force, at a total cost of about Rs 100 crore.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa made the announcements,which included procuring equipment related to bomb disposal and communication gadgets, in the state assembly while replying to the debate on grants for the Home Portfolio held by her.
She said her government would procure Non-Linear Junction Detectors to detect electronic material buried underground.
Explosive vapour detectors, X-ray baggage scanners, deep search mine detectors, multi-zone door frame metal detectors, bulletproof jackets and helmets, third generation night vision binoculars, life jackets for Marine Police, riot equipment body protectors and bomb suits used while diffusing bombs among others will also be procured, she said.
Further, she also announced constructing a series of police quarters in different parts of the state, besides providing new vehicles to them.
Jayalalithaa also said Very High Frequency (VHF) Static sets, VHF mobile sets and a series of equipment for the police and required modern equipment for Forensic Sciences Laboratory will also be procured.
The Chief Minister also proposed to equip the Fire and Rescue Services Department with modern equipment and gadgets, besides allocating funds to buy new vehicles.
