An elderly man was allegedly manhandled by a traffic policeman here during a vehicle checking drive, following which he was removed from the field duty, an officer said today.
A video footage of the purported incident, which took place yesterday, has gone viral on social media.
The senior citizen was manhandled publicly when he resisted the policeman's attempt to remove the keys of his two-wheeler during a vehicle checking drive in Rajendra Nagar area.
Talking to PTI, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Harinarayanchari Mishra said, "After getting reports about the incident, the traffic police station in-charge Mahendra Pratap Ojha has been line-attached (removed from the field duty)."
"We are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident," he added.
The video purportedly shows that the senior citizen asked the policeman under which rule he was removing the keys of his vehicle although he has allowed many other vehicles to pass without any search. Soon, a heated argument broke out between them, and the policemen allegedly abused and pushed the victim, due to which he fell to the ground.
The video also showed the policeman slapping the old man three four times after that.
Somebody, who was present at the site, had recorded the whole episode on his mobile phone and posted it on social media.
