Traffic between Panki and Medininagar was disrupted today for hours as angry locals including members of a social organisation squatted on the main road at Panki after a villager was allegedly shot dead by the police.
The policemen had gone to the village to arrest an Area Commander of an ultra outfit last midnight at Kasmar village in Panki police station of Palamau district.
Superintendent of Police Y S Ramesh said, "The officer-in-charge of Panki Police station, H P Pathak has been suspended in connection with the incident."
Acting on an information that a Maoist ultra was likely to arrive in the village, a police team had gone to Kasmar village to arrest him last midnight.
During search, the police knocked on the door of a villager, Doman Yadav, who opened the door and started fleeing on seeing the policemen in plainclothes believing them as Maoists.
The police opened fire when Yadav did not stop after their repeated pleadings and was killed.
Local residents led by Jharkhand Sangharsh Morcha Chief Dr Shashi Bhusan Mehta put up road blockades demanding arrest of the policemen and adequate compensation to the victim's family.
Ramesh assured that he would investigate the incident personally and punish the policemen if found guilty.
