At least twenty people including eight policemen were injured today when farmers demanding claims against crop insurance clashed with the police at the SDM office in Churu district's Taranagar.
Twelve farmers and eight cops were rushed to a government hospital in Tarangar, SHO Ashok Vishnoi told PTI over phone.
Hundreds of farmers holding a sit in outside the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office tried to break barricades and enter the building, he said.
When the police tried to resist them, the protesters started pelting stones, Vishnoi said.
No arrests have been made so far, the SHO said, adding that the situation was tense, but under control.
Meanwhile, CPI(M)'s state secretary Vasudev alleged that the police resorted to baton charge on farmers while holding a peaceful sit in for the last two days outside the SDM office.
At least 12 farmers were hurt in the baton charge, he alleged.
Hundreds of Kisan Sabha members have been demanding compensation under crop insurance policy for their damaged crop during the last season.
Kisan Sabha national president Amraram, who is also a CPI(M) MLA in Rajasthan, alleged that the Gehlot government was trying to suppress farmers' demands by using force.
"Kisan Sabha will not tolerate this barbarian attitude and if it is not stopped, we will launch a statewide agitation", he warned.
When contacted, the SP of Churu, Rahul Katakey denied of any baton charge on farmers and said the protesters were not allowed to enter the SDM office.
