Vajpayee did his schooling from Saraswati Shishu Mandir and Gorkhi Bara, after which he graduated from the then Victoria College, which is now called the Laxmi Bai College.
An event was also organised at Maharajbada today where Vajpayee used to deliver his historic speeches in his trademark style.
The Gorkhi school which Vajpayee had attended, was lit up in honour of its brightest student.
Celebrations are also on at his residence in Kamal Singh Ka Bagh area where at present, a computer centre is being run by his relatives.
"It is a matter of pride for Madhya Pradesh, especially Gwalior. Atalji had always preached the politics of development in the country," Tomar said, congratulating Vajpayee for receiving the Bharat Ratna.
