The Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, its Registrar and five others have been booked on charges of attempt to murder the Convenor of Save MKU Coalition, a body fighting against 'corrupt practices' in the university administration.
Criminal cases had been registered against Vice-Chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan, Registrar Muthumanickam and others under IPC sections including 307 (attempt to murder) 109 (punishment for abetment) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), police said today.
They have been booked in connection with an alleged attack on Prof Srinivasan, Convenor of the Save Madurai Kamaraj University Coalition, which has been demanding the resignation of the V-C among others, by a gang when he was going for a walk yesterday, they said.
Srinivasan suffered fracture in both hands and had been admitted to the intensive care unit of a private Hospital here.
Save MKU functionary P Vijayakumar alleged the V-C was angry with Srinivasan as the coalition had appealed to Tamil Nadu Governor, who is the university Chancellor, to remove her for providing "false" information to the search committee during her selection for the top post of the varsity.
She was also angry presuming that the Governor did not give her permission for a visit to Germany on a complaint from the Coalition, Vijayakumar claimed.
The others included in the FIR were Head of the Youth Welfare Department Chelladurai, Arivazhagan, SVK Selvaraj, a retired university staff and two others.
The coalition demanded arrest of all the accused, including the V-C to prevent tampering of evidence in the case.
