Criminal cases had been registered against Vice-Chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan, Registrar Muthumanickam and others under IPC sections including 307 (attempt to murder) 109 (punishment for abetment) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt), police said today.
They have been booked in connection with an alleged attack on Prof Srinivasan, Convenor of the Save Madurai Kamaraj University Coalition, which has been demanding the resignation of the V-C among others, by a gang when he was going for a walk yesterday, they said.
Save MKU functionary P Vijayakumar alleged the V-C was angry with Srinivasan as the coalition had appealed to Tamil Nadu Governor, who is the university Chancellor, to remove her for providing "false" information to the search committee during her selection for the top post of the varsity.
She was also angry presuming that the Governor did not give her permission for a visit to Germany on a complaint from the Coalition, Vijayakumar claimed.
The others included in the FIR were Head of the Youth Welfare Department Chelladurai, Arivazhagan, SVK Selvaraj, a retired university staff and two others.
