Vice President M Hamid Ansari and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar greeted the people of India on the eve of the Independence Day.
In his message, Ansari asked the citizens to work together towards building a modern collective and progressive nation.
"On this day, as we celebrate with pride our national achievements since independence, we remember with deep gratitude the valued contributions of our founding fathers and pay respectful homage to all those who fought for our precious freedom and thereafter contributed to preserve it," Ansari said.
"On this auspicious occasion, let us solemnly resolve to unite as one people and work collectively towards building a modern, developed and progressive nation," he added.
Meira Kumar said "as we celebrate our inspiring journey since the dawn of freedom, let us pay tributes to our valiant freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for our Independence.
She asked fellow country men to introspect "whether we have succeeded in fulfilling the promise that we made to ourselves more than six decades ago to attain social and economic emancipation".
She spoke for eradication of social inequalities and economic disparities and the creation of a just and fair social order where every person, especially the women and children, the weak and the vulnerable, have the right to live a safe and dignified life.
