World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) Secretary General Bonian Golmohammadi has called for engagement and empowerment of people for the development of human rights.
"There is a need to emphasise on engagement and empowerment of people for development of human rights," Golmohammadi said addressing a seminar on 'Human Rights: Contemporary Issues and Challenges' organised here by School of Law, Jagran Lakecity University (JLU) here recently, a release said today.
Referring to the 2030 agenda of the United Nations on sustainable development goal, he said "The 2030 agenda aims at the functional shift, a complete new way of looking at things and making changes in the world."
Talking about India's notable achievement regarding development of human rights, he said that still a lot of things need to be done.
"Vision with action can change the world," he said.
Addressing the seminar, eminent jurist Prof N R Madhava Menon called for a transformative role by law students for sustainable and equitable development of society and protection of human rights.
He gave the example of Mahatma Gandhi who believed that the true practice of law is to bring opposing parties together and getting a win-win situation for all.
Menon said the Constitution of India is well equipped with all kinds of rights but our political leaders ignore it. "Right to equality is the greatest human right in itself," he added.
JLU Chancellor Hari Mohan Gupta underlined the significance of the conference as a platform to discuss sociological and political imbalance between legislation and its execution.
