A World Health Organization (WHO) team was today rushed to Beed district in Maharashtra, which has reported a case of a 10-month-old boy being infected with the vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV) even as the Health Ministry termed it as an "isolated" case.
"It seems to be an isloted case. However, a team of WHO officials has gone to the spot," a top health ministry official told PTI.
He said the team will collect stool samples and also check the immunity status of the residents of the area from which the case has been reported.
The official also said the team, if possible, will carry out a "mop-up" operation after ascertaining the facts.
The local district health department sources yesterday said the child has Vaccine Derived Polio Virus (VDPV) type 2, a very rare variety of the disease.
The boy has been now sent to Latur for further treatment.
Dr A K Singare, residential medical office of Swami Ramanand Teerth Hospital, Ambejogai, said the child might not have got vaccination doses on time.
