"The Dalit community faced a lot of struggle to get the university's name changed. Dr Ambedkar's contribution towards the community has been immense and we would like to take it further. As a part of it, I would make efforts to get central university status for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University," Athawale said in Aurangabad.
The RPI(A) leader was speaking at the 23rd commemoration event of the Namantar Andolan (name change movement) of the university from Marathwada University to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in 1994. The university was founded in 1958.
