The mukhia (panchayat chief) identified as Pushpa Bhengra was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors referred her to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi for better treatment, police said.
Bhengra was returning home after finishing a meeting at Angrawadi village on her scooty when a group of 4/5 miscreants opened fire at her and injured her seriously, sources said.
Bhengra, who got injured on her mouth, was stated to be out of danger, sources said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Torpa), Nazir Akhtar said a hunt was on to apprehend the culprits, who managed to escape after committing the crime.
The motive behind the incident was yet to be ascertained, Akhtar added.
