A woman Trinamool Congress councillor of Kalyani in Nadia district and her ward secretary were beaten up inside the municipality building allegedly by six temporary workers today, police said.
Following the incident, those six temporary workers, who included women, were suspended by Kalyani Municipality chairman Sushil Talukdar.
Laxmi Oraon, councillor of ward 16, her ward secretary Ranjit Das were attacked by the workers when the two were leaving after meeting the chairman.
They were rescued by employees of the municipality, she said.
The two were taken to hospital where they were administered first-aid.
The assault appeared to be the result of a factional feud of the Trinamool Congress as Oraon alleged that the attack was orchestrated by two party councillors against whom she had lodged complaints of corruption.
She lodged a complaint with Talukdar, the police and to party leadership.
Talukdar said that such incidents would not be tolerated and he ordered suspension of those six temporary workers.
Trinamool district president Ujjal Biswas said, "It is an internal matter of Municipality. I have told the chairman to look into the matter for necessary action.
