A young couple - both of them engineering students - allegedly attempted to commit suicide by jumping before a metro train at Chhatarpur Metro station in South Delhi here this morning, police said.
The incident took place at 10:48 AM when Amit Chauhan (27) and Mohini (22) jumped on the metro track when a train, heading toward Huda City Centre in Gurgaon, arrived on platform Number one of the station.
"The Train Operator stopped the train by applying emergency brakes and security staff rescued the duo from the under-frame of second coach and gave clearance at 10:57 AM. Both of them received head injuries in the incident but were in conscious state. They were sent to AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) by ambulance," said a Metro spokesperson.
According to the police, the couple is out of danger.
"The CCTV footage shows that they jumped on the track together. Prima facie it seems that the couple is in a love relationship. Their family might have objected to it forcing them to take the extreme step," said a senior police official while adding that they have not recovered any suicide note from them.
The girl, who hails from Ambala in Haryana is a B Tech final year student of Kurukshetra University while Chauhan has completed M Tech from the same university. He is a resident of Kalka in Haryana.
Mohini has been living in Delhi where she is preparing for M Tech entrance exam, police said.
