Share prices spurted on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday with the 50-share Nifty index gaining 21.95 points to close at 1,036.05 points on brisk activity along with firm sentiment and higher volume of trading. The Nifty opened at 1,014.10, touched a high of 1,037.15, dipped to a low of 1,014.10 and closed at 1,036.05 points. The Midcap index gained 48.20 points at 1,179.95 points.

The trading turnover at the exchange touched Rs 1,263.90 crore with close to 5.52 crore shares changing hands. According to sources, the shares spurted mainly because the BSE was closed. This helped the operators to push up prices. Most of the index-based scrips firmed up. The foreign funds were active at select counters and later the speculators got into the act. The scrips that moved up include Pentafour Software, which touched the upper end of the filter, closing at Rs 267.15 over its previous close of Rs 242.85. It gained 10 per cent. The LML counter firmed up on FII buying, gaining over 8.85 per cent to close at Rs 125, over its last close of Rs 114.85. It touched the highest ever turnover on the NSE, with over 86.7 lakh shares worth Rs 104.72 crore changing hands.

On the other hand, the ITC scrip continued its bull run, riding on hectic support from the speculators it recorded a turnover of Rs 360.02 crore closing at Rs 646.90 over its last close of Rs 637.30. The scrip gained 1.5 per cent. The MRPL counter saw frenzied activity and firmed up to close at Rs 17.85, gaining 9.51 per cent over its previous close.
