Aiming at featuring among the top three laptop sellers in India by 2012, Asus Technology, a Taiwan-based manufacturer of laptops, PDAs and computing peripherals, is planning to sell anywhere between 20,000 and 30,000 laptops and netbooks (laptop PCs designed for mobility) per month in the country.

Reiterating the company’s intention to make rapid inroads into India, Benson CL Lin, the corporate vice-president of the over 7-billion company told Business Standard that Asus valued India as one of the key emerging global economies and foresees a great growth potential in the market for its products.

“Blazing the trail for Asus in India will be its EeePC line, which sparked the demand for netbooks worldwide and of which more than two million sets have been sold upon its launch in October 2007,” he said.

As per the IDC report, the PC shipment in India was 8.25 million in 2007-08, up 22.3 per cent over 6.75 million in 2006-07. Notebook PC shipments showed a growth of 51.2 per cent in April-June quarter of the 2008 calendar year. One in four computers shipped in FY 2007-08 was a notebook.

“The scope of growth for notebooks is demonstrated by these numbers. However, to be among the top three laptop and netbook sellers in India calls for a strategy. Towards this, we are expanding our service centre network to 10, from the present seven,” he said.
