Iltija Mufti

Iltija Mufti, daughter of People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti, is set to make her electoral debut from the family stronghold of the Bijbehara-Srigufwara constituency. She faces a direct challenge from National Conference (NC) veteran Bashir Veeri, who has lost two consecutive elections from this seat, which is regarded as a PDP bastion. At 37, Iltija represents the third generation of Mufti family politicians. Both her mother, Mehbooba Mufti, and her late grandfather, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, have previously secured victories from this constituency, formerly known as Bijbehara. Bijbehara is regarded as the Mufti family's home ground, with the party holding the seat for the past 28 years. In 1996, Mehbooba Mufti won the Assembly seat on a Congress ticket. Earlier, in 1967, her father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, secured a victory from Bijbehara. Her campaign focuses on pressing issues such as youth unemployment and rising prices, resonating with a population that has faced economic challenges.
