Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi have designed country's first working, demonstrable indigenous micro Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), in a significant development that can reduce import dependence to a large extent, officials said on Thursday. According to officials, GPUs are widely used in modern hardware, including in AI and Machine Learning engines. Currently, all GPUs are imported. This is the first working, demonstrable indigenously designed micro-GPU from India, they said. The micro-GPU architecture developed by IIT Delhi researchers will enable indigenous graphics and display-processing systems for embedded applications. The researchers at the institute's Electrical Engineering department have demonstrated programmable graphics rendering using a custom floating point GPU engine implemented entirely in Register Transfer Language (RTL) and mapped to a Spartan-7 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform. Tweaking of licensing rules by the commerce ministry's arm DGFT for imports of certain IT hardware products like laptop and computers will help boost domestic manufacturing, think tank GTRI said on Friday. Grant of exception to laptops and tablets assembled in special economic zones (SEZs) from import restrictions would make a significant shift in India's electronics manufacturing landscape, Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said. The government on Thursday tweaked the cumbersome licensing norms for import of these products and put in place an online authorisation system for importers. The new licensing or authorisation regime is primarily aimed at monitoring imports of these products to ensure that they are coming from trusted sources. These regulations are set to come into force on November 1 and are poised to reshape the industry until September 2024, it said.
