American President Donald Trump certainly believes that one of the significant contributors to the mandate he received in the United States’ (US’) elections last year was his promise to crack down on illegal immigration to that country. There is a strong perception there — which is, to an extent, backed up by official data — that the number of people crossing the border without the proper papers increased sharply after 2020. The degree to which the previous administration of President Joe Biden bears responsibility for this can be debated. But illegal migration has now become the sort of political lightning
