The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched IP infrastructure based on multi protocol label switching (MPLS) technology to offer IP VPN services.

This will save over 50 per cent of cost compared to conventional leased line network, the company said.

With the new technology, BSNL is geared to provide brandwidth on demand, video conferencing, voice over IP (VoIP) and a host of other value-added services.

"The new technology allows a service provider like BSNL to have complete control over parameters that are critical to offering its customers service guarantees. The technology enables secure virtual private networks to be built and allows scalability that will make it possible for BSNL to offer assured growth to its customers without having to make significant investments," Sumnesh Joshi, deputy general manager, marketing, Gujarat telecom circle, BSNL, said.

MPLS based VPNs reduce customer networking complexity, costs and totally do away with the requirement of in-house technical workforce.

Rather than setting up and managing individual point-to point circuits between each office using pairs of leased lines, MPLS VPN customers need to provide one connection from their office router to a service provider edge router, the company said.

"Corporate houses, particularly banks and financial institutions requiring absolute security and hassle-free networking, can now depend on the advanced MPLS based IP VAN services," said Joshi.
