Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC) today announced it has signed a Rs 5,080 crore contract with GIL-SIL, a joint venture between GMR Infrastructure and SEW Infrastructure Ltd for construction of 402 kilometre double track line between Mughalsarai-New Bhaupur (Kanpur) section of Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor.

"GIL-SIL won the contract from among 24 other bidders through an international competitive bidding process. An agreement in this regard has been signed on 27 May," DFCC said in a statement. The JV was handed the Letter of Award for the project last month.

The project involves two packages -- 180 Km Mughalsarai to Karchana and 237 Km Karchana to Bhaupur -- to be implemented on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis. "The track infrastructure so constructed will be suitable for running of freight trains at maximum speed of 100 kmph," the statement said.

DFCCIL, a special purpose vehicle set up under the rail ministry, is undertaking construction, maintenance and operation of Dedicated Freight Corridors in the Country. The Eastern and Western rail freight corridor projects are expected to ease the freight load on passenger lines and by adding to railways freight carrying capacity. The eastern corridor covers a length of approximately 1,840 Km.

By awarding these contracts, civil work for total length of 871 km from Sonnagar to Khurja has been awarded, DFCC said. The entire Eastern Corridor from Mughalsarai to Ludhiana is being funded by the World Bank while the Western Corridor is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
