Homegrown furniture major Godrej Interio is bullish on the North India market, especially UP.

UP alone accounts for roughly Rs 100 crore to the company’s turnover and is growing by 20 per cent.

“North India market, notably UP, is strong and there is lot of potential in various segments, including home, office and lab furniture,” Godrej Interio chief operating officer (COO) Anil Mathur told Business Standard here.

The company is also expanding its mattress portfolio rapidly to increase its share in the domestic organised mattress space estimated at Rs 1,500 crore. Godrej, which entered the segment in 2007 did a business of Rs 55 crore last financial year.

The majority share in mattress segment estimated at Rs 1,200 crore is accounted for by coir and foam mattresses, while spring mattresses are still to catch the fancy of customers.

Godrej is looking to increasing its revenues from the segment to almost Rs 200 crore in the next 3 years. “UP is a key market and contributes nearly 15 per cent to our overall business,” he said. UP’s organised mattress market is about Rs 100 crore.

Further, Godrej has plans to launch 50 ‘Sleep Studios’ pan-India this year, which would be exclusive mattress retail zones spread over 200 sq ft.

“These outlets would be equipped with ‘comfy meter’ to help customers choose the product best suited to their body types and weight from our range of mattresses,” company’s product head Soneshwar Prasad said.

In UP, Interio has 250 retailers, which will be ramped up by 100 this financial year, including 20 in Lucknow. Pan-India, the company has a network of 1,200 channel partners and 800 more would be added this year.

“We will soon introduce special mattresses range for hotel and hospitals,” Prasad added. Earlier, they launched ‘comfy meter’ in the UP market.
