Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd (Iffco) Chairman Surinder Jakhar, 56, was killed today when his own pistol got accidentally fired, on his farm at Abohar, around 130 km from Ferozepur in Punjab.
He was the son of ex-Madhya Pradesh governor Balram Jakhar, who’s also a former Speaker of the Lok Sabha and ex-Union agriculture minister.
Police officials said Jakhar was cleaning the firearm when it went off accidentally at his Kinnow farm. The time appears to have been a little after noon. He was rushed to hospital but declared brought dead.
He had been re-elected as chairman of Iffco, the world’s largest fertiliser cooperative federation, in 2009. Jakhar was also on the boards of many other cooperatives.
