Infosys today announced it would start construction of its 25,000 seat Mohali facility within one month and complete the first stage of the project within 18 months. Punjab allotted 50 acre land to the Infosys and 26 more players in February 2014. The land was allotted for three years on lease on the condition that if the companies failed to invest in stipulated time, Punjab government will scrap the MoU. The company committed an investment of about Rs 527 cr in phases at the proposed Mohali facility.

Infosys Executive Vice President Ramadas Kamath gave this commitment to Punjab Deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal during an interaction held in Bengaluru as part of the build up to the Invest Punjab summit being held in Mohali in October this year.

The Deputy Chief Minister is visiting Bangalore to ensure the participation of major IT players and other industrial houses in the upcoming meet for mobilising investment in Punjab.

Besides Infosys, the Deputy chief minister also held meetings with other industrial groups and according to Punjab Government officials, Volvo has proposed to enter into a PPP with the Punjab government for the Bus Rapid Transport system in Amritsar besides considering setting up a manufacturing facility for Volvo cars in Punjab.

Meanwhile Volvo India Managing Director Kamal Bali and Volvo buses MD VRV Sriprasad during their interaction with Mr Badal and his team said there was a huge scope for cooperation in city bus and bus rapid transport systems. Sriprasad said Volvo was the only company which was manufacturing BRTS buses and viability of a joint venture with Volvo for BRTS was discussed. In another meeting Toyota Vice President Vikram Kirloskar offered to set up an ITI in Punjab to give training in automotive repair and maintenance. The Deputy CM said the State could even enter into a joint venture with Toyota for establishing this facility.
