The Navaratna company Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) is planning to add 2500 mega watt (MW) capacity in the next three years.

Though the rectification works in thef irst Unit were completed and synchronised the Unit in February 2014, it could not abtain stabilised operation till date due to recurring of the technical problem of Super Heater Coil in Fludized Bed Heat Exchangers (FBHE).

The company expects Unit-I to be commissioned within this month and Unit II in October 2014, as committed by BHEL during the High Level Review meeting held by Secretary Coal last month.

Another 2X500 MW, joint venture NTPL project at Tuicorin, lighting up of Unit I Boiler was completed in March 2014 and it is expected that Unit I to be commissioned this month and Unit II in October 2014.

In his Independence Day speech at Neyveil, Mohan said that contracts for the three major packages of 2X500 MW Neyveli New Thermal Power Plant (NNTPP) have already been awarded for a total value of Rs 4,751 crore and project activites are gaining momentum. "It must be our prime endeavour to commission Unit-I in October 2017 and Unit II in April 2018."
NLC, which forayed into renewable energy sector last year, said erection activties of the 51 MW Wind project is going well at Tirunelveli and commissioning of first three sets of Wind Turbo Generators are expected by end of this month and the balance is to be commissioned before October 2014.

For company's maiden 10 MW solar plant at Neyveli, orders are placed with BHEL for installing 10 MW photo voltaic solar power plant at Neyveli.

The year 2013-14 was an eventful and record breaking for the company in production front as well as financial front. The company exceeded the MoU level target in all fronts and registered a positive growth and
19988.73 MU of power generated against the target of 18800 MU.

As far as financial front, the company achieved an ever highest total income of Rs 6,992 crore, compared to Rs 819 crore, a year ago, up by 13.27%. The company reported a net profit of Rs 1,501.88 crore.
"However, the profit that we have earned does not commensurate with the increase in total income, obviously due to higher expenditure," he said.

Speaking about the first quarter performance of the current fiscal, he said the results are found to be satisfactory in power generation front, however in respect of overburden removal and lignite production, 92.08% and 93.74% of the respective targets only have been achieved leaving certain shortfalls. Besides production, project implementation is another area to be addressed.
