Anil Ambani-led Reliance Power today said it will invest Rs 6,000 crore to double the generation capacity of its Rosa thermal plant in Uttar Pradesh to 2,400 MW.
"The power generation capacity of the Rosa Power Project would increase from 1,200 MW to 2,400 MW," the company said in a statement.
The Rs 6,000 crore capex for doubling the capacity of the power plant by March, 2012, will take RPower's total investment on the Rosa project to Rs 12,000 crore, the statement said.
The Rosa power project is a 1,200-MW coal-based power plant being set up in two stages of 600-MW each. The first stage of the project has been fully commissioned and work on the second stage is on in full swing.
Production from the second phase of the project is likely to commence in one year, RPower said.
The electricity generated by the plant is being supplied to Uttar Pradesh Power Company Limited (UPPCL) under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
Coal for the project is sourced from the Ashoka Mine in Jharkhand's North Karanpura Block, which is situated around 850 km away, through a long-term coal supply linkage granted by the Ministry of Coal.
A long-term coal supply linkage for Stage-II of the project has also been secured from Ministry of Coal and the funding requirement has been tied up from a consortium of banks led by IDBI Bank.
