Samsung Electronics Co, the world's top computer memory maker, said today that it has developed a new computer memory module that reads and writes data at a speed twice as fast as previous devices.

Samsung will begin production of the new DDR4 dynamic random access memory (DRAM) module in 2012, using the 30-nanometer class technology, the tech behemoth said in a statement.

The DRAM industry's mainstay products at the moment are DDR3 devices, which feature enhanced performance over DDR2 products.

Samsung became the first in the industry to develop DDR4, it claimed.

The new device also reduces power consumption by about half, it added.

It transfers data at a rate of 2.133 gigabits per second at 1.2 volts, compared with DDR3 DRAM models, which transfer data at a speed of 1.6 Gbps at 1.35V or 1.5V. (Yonhap)
