The data, based on the Civil Registration System (CRS), mentioned it was 84.4 per cent in 2012.
The CRS is a unified process of continuous, permanent and compulsory recording of the vital events pertaining to citizens in a country. In India, it covers the registration of births and deaths.

Seventeen states and Union Territories have achieved the target of 100 cent per cent registration. Excluding Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where registration is 68.6 per cent and 57.4 per cent, registered births for the rest of the country is estimated at 96.8 per cent in 2013.
The number of registered male births rose to 11.8 million in 2013 (53 per cent) from 10.4 million in 2012. Female registration rose from 9.4 million to 10.6 million (47 per cent) over the same period. Because of lower female registration, the sex ratio at birth declined from 908 in 2012 to 898 in 2013.
The data also points out that 16.39 million people were added to the population of the country in this period.
The number of registered deaths more than doubled in 2013 to 6.1 million as compared to 1982, when it was 2.5 million.
The total level of death registration was 70.9 per cent in 2013 as compared to 69.3 per cent in the previous year. While 58 per cent of all male deaths have been registered, the likewise share for females is 42 per cent.
The share of institutional deaths was 42.8 per cent in 2013. The data reveals around 27 per cent of the deceased did not receive any medical attention before death. 11 States/UTs have achieved the target of cent per cent level of registration of deaths. Eight among 20 major states have crossed more than 90 percent registration.
The percentage of registered infant deaths to total number of deaths reached 3.1 per cent in 2013.
