A delegation from the American aircraft manufacturer Boeing have met Tamil Nadu government officials and assured that it would recommend some of its suppliers to set up their operations in the state. The visit is at a time when the State administration is preparing an Aerospace policy and plans to launch an aerospace component manufacturing park in the State.

Speaking at the Tamil Nadu Manufacturing Summit, organised by Confederation of Indian Industry in Chennai today, B Elangovan, general manager, at Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd (TIDCO) said, “a delegation from Boeing has came down and met the officials recently. They have not finalised anything, but said that they will recommend some of their suppliers to look at the options to set up operations in the State.”

He was responding to a question on the possibilities of inviting the aircraft giants such as Boeing to set up facility in Tamil Nadu, which would create opportunities for the suppliers. The officials expect that the company might identify one or two of the big suppliers it has, to set up their facility in the State.

However, he did not reveal more on the matter. Boeing officials were not immediately available for a comment.

Meanwhile, the official has said that the government is expected to announce the Aerospace Policy in next couple of months, without mentioning a time line. He added that while Karnataka has already announced a policy, the policy of Tamil Nadu would have more features.

TIDCO has acquired around 300 acre space in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, to set up an aerospace competent manufacturing and would be forming a special purpose vehicle for the execution of the project. It has also identified land for its Maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) facility in a 50 acre space near the Airport, in Chennai. The Corporation has identified the land, he said. The government would be looking for a few anchor industries to work in the Park, once it is set up.

The Park would also have a testing and certification facility to support the firms in getting their products certified and a special cell would be there to coordinate with the defence organisations which would help the companies to find their market.
