Central team reviews rain situation in Kerala

The state government has sought Rs.481 crore central assistance for the widespread damage in 891 villages

A central team, which is here to assess the damage cost in the heavy rain lashing Kerala since the onset of the southwest monsoon on June 1, reviewed the situation this morning.

The seven-member team has divided itself into two groups to visit the rain affected districts from today, official sources said.

While one team will tour the districts of Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam, another would visit Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode district.

The team headed by Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Vumlunmang Vualnam had arrived here yesterday to take stock of the rain damage to life and property in the state.

The state government has sought Rs.481 crore central assistance for the widespread damage in 891 villages.

The rain has so far claimed 131 lives.

The team would meet Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Tuesday.
