Chhattisgarh reports 427 new Covid-19 cases, 3 deaths

Chhattisgarh on Monday reported 427 new Covid-19 positive cases and three deaths, as per the state health department.

With these new cases, the tally of people infected with the virus in the state has climbed to 12,625 including 3,509 active cases, 9,017 discharges and 99 deaths.

Health officials are quitting or getting fired amid outbreak

Vilified, threatened with violence and in some cases suffering from burnout, dozens of state and local public health officials around the US have resigned or have been fired amid the coronavirus outbreak, a testament to how politically combustible masks, lockdowns and infection data have become.

 

The latest departure came Sunday, when California's public health director, Dr. Sonia Angell, quit without explanation following a technical glitch that caused a delay in reporting virus test results information used to make decisions about reopening businesses and schools.

 

Last week, New York City's health commissioner was replaced after months of friction with the Police Department and City Hall.

 

A review by the Kaiser Health News service and The Associated Press finds at least 48 state and local public health leaders have resigned, retired or been fired since April across 23 states. The list has grown by more than 20 people since the AP and KHN began tracking departures in June.

Jharkhand's Covid-19 death toll rises to 189 with 11 more fatalities

Eleven more people succumbed to Covid-19 in Jharkhand on Monday, pushing the death toll to 189, a state government bulletin said.

 

A total of 531 fresh cases raised the tally in the state to 18,786, it said.

Bihar reports 21 more Covid deaths, 3,021 fresh cases

With 21 more Covid-19 patients succumbing to the disease, the death toll in Bihar reached 450 on Monday, while 3,021 fresh infections took the states coronavirus caseload to 82,741, a health department bulletin said.

 

A total of 31,754 positive cases was detected in just 10 days, as per the health departments data.

 

The number of total tests has also doubled in 10 days. The state had tested 5,48,172 samples till July 31 and the figure is 10,97,252 on Monday.

 

Similarly, the number of tests conducted per day has also witnessed more than three-fold rise during the period - from 22,742 to 75,346.

1,806 new Covid-19 cases found in Pune

Pune district reported 1,806 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking its count to 1,09,326 on Monday, while 52 more patients succumbed to the infection, a health official said.

 

The death toll rose to 2,504 with 52 more patients succumbing to the infection during the same period in the western Maharashtra district, he said.

 

Also, 1,499 patients were also discharged from hospitals, the official said.

44 new cases take Sikkim's Covid-19 tally to 910

Sikkim on Monday reported 44 fresh Covid-19 cases, raising the Himalayan state's tally to 910, an official said.

 

Of the new cases, 36 were reported from South Sikkim and eight from East Sikkim, Director General-cum-Secretary, Health, Dr Pempa T. Bhutia said.

Covid-19 fatality rate in Bengal highest among people over 75 years

At 13.89 per cent, the Covid-19 fatality rate in West Bengal is the highest among people aged above 75 years, the health department said in its bulletin.
 

In the age group of 61-75 years, the rate stands at 6.58 per cent, it said.
 

The department, however, did not mention the total number of Covid-19 deceased in the respective age groups.

Two more succumb to Covid-19 in Himachal, death toll 16

Two Covid-19 patients died in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla and Mandi districts on Monday, pushing the state's case fatalities to 16, officials said.
 

A 49-year-old man died at Indira Gandhi Medical College here, Shimla Chief Medical Officer Surekha Chopra said. He had been referred from Solan district's Baddi on August 8.
 

In Mandi, a 70-year-old man of died of Covid-19.
 

A resident of Jawahar Nagar, he was admitted to Shri Lal Bahadur Shashtri Government Medical College with acute respiratory infection on Sunday, CMO Devendra Sharma said.

20 more die in Punjab, 988 cases take tally to 24,889

Twenty more people have died due to Covid-19 in Punjab and 988 fresh cases pushed the state's infection tally to 24,889 on Monday, as per a medical bulletin.

 

Seven fatalities were reported in Patiala, six in Ludhiana, three in Jalandhar, two in Ferozepur and one each in Moga and Mohali, it said.

 

Two death cases which were reported from Patiala and Ludhiana on Sunday were excluded as they were counted twice, as per the bulletin.

 

Among districts which reported new cases included Ludhiana (246), Patiala (198), Jalandhar (156), Sangrur (60), Mohali (59), Gurdaspur (37) and Amritsar (32).

Gujarat reports 1,056 new Covid-19 cases, state tally rises to 72,120

Gujarat on Monday reported 1,056 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall count to 72,120, state health department said. With 20 more people succumbing to the infection, the toll mounted to 2,674 in the state, it said.

 

The number of recoveries rose by 1,138 to 55,276, an official release said. Gujarat now has 14,170 active cases. The condition of 76 patients critical, it said.

Maharashtra on Monday reported 9,181 fresh cases of COVID-19, taking its tally to 5,24,513, while the death toll crossed the 18,000-mark with 293 new fatalities, said a state health official. The statewide tally stood at 5,24,513 with the addition of 9,181 new cases, while the fatality figure rose to 18,050 after 293 more patients succumbed to the infection, he said.

 

Also, 6,711 patients were discharged from hospitals, pushing up the recovery tally to 3,58,421, the official said.

Jammu and Kashmir's coronavirus tally crosses 25,000-mark with 470 new cases

Jammu and Kashmir on Monday reported 470 new Covid-19 cases, taking the Union Territory's coronavirus tally past the 25,000-mark to 25,367, according to a PTI report.

 

A statement issued by the Information and Public Relations department said that a total of 470 persons have tested positive in the past 24 hours, of which 102 are in Jammu division and 368 in Kashmir division.

 

Of the total 25,367 positive cases detected in the UT so far, 17,375 persons have completely recovered. Meanwhile, six persons succumbed to the dreaded virus in the last 24 hours, taking the UT's death toll to 478.

537 new cases, 23 deaths; Nashik Covid-19 count now 20,511

The COVID-19 count in Nashik district crossed the 20,000 mark to touch 20,511 after 537 people were detected with the infection on Monday, an official said. The death toll increased by 23 during the day, including 15 in Nashik municipal limits, to reach 620, he said.

 

So far, 15,281 persons have been discharged, including 417 on Monday, the official added.

Karnataka CM Yediyurappa recovers from Covid-19, discharged from hospital

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has recovered 'completely' from COVID-19 and was on Monday discharged from a private hospital here, the state government said.

 

The 77-year old leader was admitted to the Manipal Hospital on August 2 after he tested positive for coronavirus.

 

"After recovering from Covid-19 completely, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has been discharged from the Manipal Hospital," an official statement said.

Study identifies longer-term symptoms in Covid-19 patients

Researchers, including one of Indian-origin, have identified a pattern of longer-term symptoms likely to be experienced by people who were hospitalised with the COVID-19 infection. They include fatigue, breathlessness, psychological distress - including problems with concentration and memory - and a general decline in the quality of life.

 

Some patients, particularly those who had been in intensive care, had symptoms associated with cases of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), according to the study, published in the Journal of Medical Virology.

"Covid-19 is a new illness and we have very little information on longer-term problems in individuals after discharge from the hospital," said study author Manoj Sivan from the University of Leeds in the UK.

71 fresh coronavirus cases reported in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar; total count 6,016

Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar on Monday recorded 71 new coronavirus cases, pushing the district's infection numbers to 6,016, official data showed. So far, the district has reported 43 infection deaths with the mortality rate hovering around 0.71 per cent, according to official statistics.

 

The number of active cases stood at 932 as 68 more patients were discharged since Sunday, according to the data released by the UP Health Department for a 24-hour period. Gautam Buddh Nagar stands 11th on the list of districts in the state in terms of active cases.
